Have your say about the ABC/Savoy Cinema

Saturday morning at last and for some of us, as kids and teenagers, we would, about now, be heading down town for our weekly treat of the infamous Saturday morning pictures. Obviously we at Save our Town are interested in saving all things Lutonian and you don’t get much more Lutonian than our precious ABC/Savoy Cinema (as was) on George Street. Be it memories of that weekend collection of films (remember The Runaway Train?!), those boxes of Maltesers that seemed to go on ad infinitum, your first viewing of Grease/ET (other retro movies are available) or a first date, of a certain age, we all have a tale or two to tell, not least the infamous queue up George Street West, which was almost a social event in itself.
We all know it has stood forlorn for a long time now, despite attempts to restore her to her former glory for the good of the community but the time has come to accept that she is destined for development and, at a recent public meeting with Luton Heritage Forum, this was confirmed although no plans have yet been formally submitted that we can find.
Now, in an ideal world, which clearly we do not live in, we need to know from you, so just maybe we can point the new custodians in the right direction, what it is about the old girl you would like to see pan out for her future with our minds very much on a walk down memory lane.
If you can spare a few minutes, please would you help us to gather some information as to your hopes and dreams for the future of this locally historic site by completing the survey below. Thanks in advance. We will then share our findings with Luton Heritage in the hope that our heritage can be considered! Now who’s for some Butterkist …?!
