LUTON’S BEST KEPT SECRET – Update!
Although people close to the motoring press and Vauxhall Motors will be very aware of the superb collection of sixty classic and historic vehicles preserved at the we are acutely aware that many people in the Luton area have no idea it even exists. It only opened to the public for one day every year.
Save Our Town will argue that this collection is probably the most important physical representation of Luton’s heritage and history that survives today.
A small sample of the collection is on temporary display at The Stockwood Park Discovery Centre and we’re delighted to say that this exhibition has reopened following closure during November Covid lockdown. For opening times and to pre-book (essential) FREE tickets please click here.
Save Our town have been working, for many months, with Culture Trust Luton, LBC and Vauxhall Motors to help planning towards a new Visitor Centre that will be permanently open to all. It will be a long road to fulfil this ambition but we are underway.
During many conversations with the people of our town numerous questions were asked of us by people wanting to know more about the huge role Vauxhall plays in the life of the town and its historic significance – at a personal and family level and as an industrial giant of the 20th Century. Members of the Save Our Town team have personal experience of Vauxhall and, although able to answer some questions, frequently had to refer to one of the many books written about the Company and its products.
With Christmas around the corner, many of our followers will be looking for gift ideas. A perfect present for anyone with even the slightest interest in Vauxhall Motors or Bedford Trucks is, the superb, Britain’s Oldest Car Maker by Ian Coomber. It is available online, together with other Vauxhall Heritage related gifts from Culture Trust Luton website
